I’ve been looking forward to this entry and it doesn’t disappoint: seven reasons “The Laughing Gnome” is brilliant.

5. The Gnome saved Bowie from a life of cabaret. “Bowie included the song in his ill-fated cabaret audition, with the assistance of a glove-puppet gnome.” (Nicholas Pegg; my emphasis.)

6. A bassoon is a lead instrument. And as Buckley notes, it’s playing a riff that, mutated, would crop again and again in Bowie tracks, like “Speed of Life” and “Scary Monsters (and Super Creeps).”

I’m a bit scared of Bowie Songs I think, partially because a lot of that Deram stuff is absolute crud, partially because, if pushed, i would probably put bowie in my top five musical artistes evereverever despite never having heard about three quarters of his output (no, srsly, beyond Ziggy, the 69-74 hits compi and the obvious chart stuff since then and 1. Outside, i don’t know any of it…)

Also, let us not forget that Laughing Gnome is the clear inspiration for this:
